Search Engine Marketing

There is not much point having a web site if no one knows it's there.

Whilst being on the internet will help raise your profile it is important to note that in order for your company or organisation to be successful it needs to have an offline marketing strategy as well. The offline marketing campaign could include, Public Relations, Press advertising, Corporate materials etc.

Which Search Engines?

You may have seen those adverts trying to lure you into submitting your site to 2500+ search engines! Well, in reality only only 3 search engines dominate the market. Together Google, Yahoo and MSN search are responsible for over 80% of search engine traffic. I would think twice before paying for subscription to 2500+ search engines.

Note: Google serves results for AOL so in real terms Google's share of the market is 44%. Google is still the undisputed leader.

Online Marketing Strategies:

Back in the old days, one could create a web site and start ranking well in search engines almost immediately. Back in the good old days. However, as the internet as grown and search engine technology has improved, this means you are competing with a whole lot more web sites for your chosen keywords. This is where search engine marketing comes in...

Search Engine Marketing:

"Encompasses several forms of marketing products and services on the internet through management of information presented by search engines and directories. Included are such elements as site optimisation, and the purchase and placement of advertisements."Click here for more definitions

Natural SEO takes time, with Google for e.g recognised that your web site may not start ranking well for round about 1yr … so immediate results is unlikely.

If on the other hand you’re looking for immediate results from search engines then you may want to consider going through the paid route – Pay-Per-Click advertising.

  • Pay-Per Click (PPC) Advertising:

"a method of advertising on search engines where the advertiser pays for visits based on keywords they have selected. The position of the results is usually based on how much the advertiser has bid for the keyword."Click for more definitions

Ideally, your natural SEO efforts will help you achieve your desired results but some industries are so competitive that you will need to carry out a PPC campaign in order to achieve desired results and maximum exposure.
